The times for the quarter-mile runs (as conducted by Road & Track) were 15.4 seconds for the 2.4 litre Porsche 911E, 17.5 seconds for the Mazda RX-2.
The prices were 78 for the Porsche, 95 for the Mazda.*
All of which proves that you can get great acceleration without spending a bundle.
But Mazda gives you a lot more for your money than just acceleration.
First, you get a car with the rotary engine, the
engine the entire industry’s talking about. And for good reasons.
It's inherently more efficient, delivering almost twice as much horsepower per cubic inch as piston engines do.
It runs on lead-free gas, and as low as 70 octane.

Road Test looked at 34 cars, including all those at the left, before naming the Mazda RX-2 "Import Car of the Year!'
Here’s why they gave Mazda their award: “Fantastic performance!
’’Its main forte” said Road Test, "is fantastic performance coupled to a modest thirst!’
"Mazda will simply squirt away from anything else in its field!’ they said. Acceleration tests prove it “a long league ahead of other cars in its price and size brackets”
Mazda’s rotary engine is why. It develops about twice the normal horsepower for its size, versus conventional piston engines. But power is only part of the rotary story. “Uncannily quiet!’
"The greatest appeal of the rotary!’ said Road Test. "is the smooth turbine-like power sensation, the quietness of the engine, and of course the simplicity and compact size of the powerplant... the car is uncannily quiet!’
A “trouble-free carl’ Road Test's experience with Mazda includes driving one for 50,000 miles.
At the 10,000 mark, they said: "..obviously this trouble-free car is safe to buy through the mails!'
At 30,000 miles, they said it more emphatically: "No car tested by us in our seven years (over 500 cars tested) has been more trouble-free!'

Test tore down Mazda’s rotary engine. Their finding: "The apex seals were the only parts in the entire engine with measurable wear!’ And these showed so little wear that the magazine projected their life to be in excess of 150,000 miles!
Finally, Road Test pointed out the reason Mazda’s rotary is so long-lasting:
"Eliminating such things as valves, camshaft, lifters, rocker gear, rods, and wristpins also eliminates forever all the things that can go wrong with them!’
A “lanolin-smooth shift.
Mazda's RX-2 Four-Door Sedan, adds Road Test, is "one of the few on earth that combine full instrumentation, including a tech, with a console shift!'
The four-speed synchromesh gearbox is "Ianolin-smooth… among the best we have ever encountered, and in a class with Porsche or Alfa in ease of operation!"
And the brakes really brake. Our test car would stop from 60 mph repectedly within 150 feet without smoke or fuss!' They're power-assist, including the front discs.
“Car of the Decade”?
You’ve just seen a few reasons why Mazda won the award. But one last quote fro Road Test: “Mazda might have won even without the rotary engine. With the rotary, we think it’s not only Import Car of the Year, but probably of the Decade."
