It's called the RX-4 Hardtop. Our newest rotary-engine Mazda. It has a larger, more powerful engine. You’re still going to need power to accelerate onto highways, pass, or climb a hill. It’s strong enough to let you add automatic transmission and air conditioning without bogging down.
With Mazda's thermal reactor system and emission controls, you won’t have to deal with stalling, flattening out when you drive, or dieseling after you shut it off.
The rotary engine RX-4 offers some other important benefits. It gets good mileage on low-octane gas. It's extremely quiet at any speed. You can learn to appreciate the sound of silence, or the strains of your favorite music, without a lot of extra sounds thrown in.
Because the RX-4 Hardtop is a larger car than previous Mazdas, with a longer wheel base and a wider track, it has improved roadability that lets it track smoothly through corners.
Variable ratio steering gives a positive, responsive feel. You get smooth, untiring performance that relaxes rather than interferes with your senses.
This relaxing performance lets you appreciate some of the other unusual features of the RX-4 Hardtop. Features that are exceptional for a small car. It has a wraparound cockpit-type dash. All controls and dials are easy to reach. And easy to read; at night a special luminescent panel glows green for better visibility. Overhead a special console features an adjustable map light, like you’d find on an airplane.
The RX-4 also comes in a sedan and wagon. All are rich with standard features: tachometer, locking gas filler door, windshield wiper with new intermittent action, rear-window defroster, power-assist front disc brakes, radial ply tires and fully-reclining bucket seats.
