Economy cars and sporting sedans would seem to have directly opposed requirements. On the one hand, a strict need for maximum fuel efficiency and a low price.

On the other, spirited performance and a refinement of chassis behaviour and feel, achievable only with technological sophistication and thorough development. Imagine the engineer’s dilemma: the concepts of economy and sport would seem so contradictory as to be impossible in one car. At least, improbable.
Mazda’s GLC Sport meets that improbability straight-on. Its fuel efficiency is certified, its value a matter of record. And its sporting capabilities can be appreciated by the most demanding drivers. Because it’s designed by demanding
engineers.
Fully independent suspension has extra firm shock absorber rates and anti-roll bars front and rear. The overhead
camshaft engine drives the front wheels through a five-speed transaxle

operated by an advanced, precise, parallel-linkage shifter. In back, the unique Twin Trapezoidal Link rear suspension maintains optimal rear wheel geometry. And the rack-and-pinion steering
combines light feel with sure directional stability and predictable response. The GLC Sport is no mere economy car.
Prove it. In New Eng
land, demanding driving roads are plentiful. Two special ones: The Mohawk Trail in Massachusetts, the Molly Stark Trail in Vermont. Together, they loop a winding path through American history and over majestic mountains. Ancient Mohawks used their trail for war on
other tribes, then for peaceful trade with early settlers. Later, Gen. Stark led his American troops into the pivotal Battle of Bennington
in 1777: "Today we win this battle or tomorrow night Molly Stark sleeps a widow," he said. His men gave three cheers and won the fight, but it's only myth that Molly Stark led extra troops over the trail to her husband's aid.
Now as then, the old trails still make demands.
Leave Bennington, and Molly's trail climbs the west slope of the Green Mountains, peaks, then plunges down again. Pavement can be man's smoothest or winter ravage's worst; the GLC Sport's compliant suspension provides ample

Past Wilmington’s
wood-floored 1836 Country Store. On to Brattleboro and a covered bridge. A short section of Interstate and the Mohawk Trail winds alone rivers, upstream into the mountains again. The same winters that leave forests a lush green and build foliage tunnels also take their toll on the roads. The Sport never loses composure.
The Mohawk Trail climbs to a peak overlooking four states, then less than one mile later folds back on itself at "The Famous Hairpin Turn." Comine down the hill to this aspnalt jackknife, the Sport brakes, downshifts, comers, accelerates away and is gone.
Mazda's GLC Sport meets the demands of
old roads in New England because it already met the demands of Mazda's exacting engineers in Japan. They made the improbable possible: an economical car to satisfy the enthusi
astic driver. It took care and effort. No one said it would be easy.
After such an accomplishment, few would expect more, either. But there is. This year all the Sport's attributes are
available in a 4-door Sport Sedan version as well as the familiar 3-door hatchback. Now there's a Sport for any style.
In the 1982 Monte Carlo Rally, Mazda GLCs came in 1st and 2nd in their class, winning by a wide margin over their competition.
So while only fine lines may separate fact from fiction in the legends of the historic New England trails, other lines delineate clearly the GLC Sport's substance.
