Proof of their solutions is found searching out other old mysteries of another, older past. Deep in Mississippi's woods, the old Natchez Trace winds its way through soft hills and a nation's history. So, too, will go the 626 GT Turbo, along that
old river, through old haunts, chasing old ghosts. But with new solutions from Mazda's engineers.
One is under the hood. The overhead cam engine delivers the razor-sharp response and efficiency of electronic fuel injection and the pumped-up muscle of turbocharging. Turbos often have sluggish throttle response—boost lag, it's called—and peaky, fussy power curves. But the 626 GT Turbo supplies both honed refinement and pulse-quickening performance, with an advanced-technology turbocharger that virtually eliminates boost lag, pumps in a broad band of power and adds the reliability of water-cooled bearings.
The result? An engine spirited as the best horse in the county, refined as the annual debutante ball. A mystery unlocked.
Mazda's leadership in chassis development continues with Automatic Adjusting Suspension (AAS), which brings computer control to shock absorber valving. At the touch of a button a driver can
select to suit personal taste or highway demands: Normal, for optimum ride; or Sport, for sharpest handling. And on the unique Automatic setting, the computer takes over, near-magically (but without mystery) adjusting shock absorber rates for any condition encountered, instantaneously.
The result? A suspension system responsive as kids to July lemonade, comfortable as a Sunday afternoon. Another mystery unlocked.
