The sports car world has a weight problem.
Convinced that the solution to everything is more horsepower, car companies have forgotten how to trim fat. The RX-7, on the other hand, stays true to the concept of the pure sports car. No extra gadgets. So it weighs about a half a ton less than most of its competitors. And while unique sequential twin turbo rotary engine takes you from 0-60 in 4.9 seconds, the real thrill comes from combining that thrust with handling usually reserved for cars you watch on the sports channel. Perhaps that’s why the RX-7 was named to Car and Driver’s “Ten Best List”.* It’s a lesson in what can happen when you lighten up.

t to build another heavy-metal cruiser, but to return to the pure sports car. So instead of adding
gadgetry, we streamlined. Firest we chopped 20 pounds off the greenhouse area. And another 17 from the exhaust system. Then we drilled holes to lighten up the brake pedals. We even trimmed the spark plug wires. The result is a 255-horse rotary rocket that Car and Driver calls one of the “Ten Best” cars of 1994.
